  • As a frustrated architect, explorer, and social examiner, Derek’s work has recently focused on the social, economic and political transformations taking place in the Arctic. He received his MFA in sculpture and extended media at Virginia Commonwealth University and a BFA in sculpture and photography at Western Washington University. He has exhibited nationally and internationally including exhibitions at the Anchorage Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Tacoma Art Museum, Art Museum of the University of Memphis, Yukon Arts Center, Houston Center for Photography, Coté’s has screened award-winning short films in several film festivals internationally, received a professional artist fellowship from numerous foundations. In addition to crafting self-led expeditions to the Arctic, Coté has been a resident artist at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, The Arctic Circle expedition and with the Anchorage Museum’s Polar Lab.
