Castillo Ilich

Ilich Castillo (b.1978) is a video artist working in Guayaquil and lecturer at ITAE (Ecuador), where he previously completed the Visual Arts BFA program. He is a former member of the artist collective “La Limpia” (2001-2006) and a film programmer for the ITAE filmclub. Castillo’s work focuses on the use of different media such as video, sculpture, and drawing. He is motivated by the potential for a practice located in the error phenomena, despised by certain filmmakers for being considered mere mistakes; he explores a “low quality aesthetic” and the pursuit and enhancement of certain effects that result from the inaccurate implementation of technical equipment. Recent exhibitions include Fuera de campo (con Glitch), OchoyMedio Movie Theatre, Quito (2010); Lo que las imàgenes quieren, ICO Foundation, Madrid (2007); Interamerican Video Biennial (BID), Washington,Córdova, Santiago, Roma, Cartagena, Montevideo; Pasado Imperfecto Sao Paulo Cultural Center (2011); and the International Biennial of Cuenca, Ecuador (2011).
